Chapter Seven

Mike, Austin, James, Brian, and Jane, who had come home from school to no one, met up at the house. The four boys were going through the papers they had managed to salvage. Jane was in the kitchen doing her homework. Now and then, she would look up to see what the four boys were doing, "What are you guys doing with all those newspapers?" She asked them as she plopped her math homework next to the homework she was about to start.

The boys read every page. Michael answered Jane as he quickly picked up another paper and started to read, "A history project?"

"On what?"

"Benmar Township," Austin responded as he put another newspaper into a pile he had gone through.

Unfortunately, after some time, they ran out of newspapers to go through. They had yet to find anything on the topic they were searching for.

Mike slammed the last paper down on the table. "We tried, guys. We tried." He put his face in his hands as he said that.

Austin leaned his head back on the couch. He was exhausted, and the huge rush of adrenaline at the library didn't help either. He lifted his head back up, "Well, what else should we do?"

James and Brian shrugged and put their paper down on the coffee table. Mike started to think, "Well, we can't just go around asking people what the hell they think happened."

Mike looked at Austin with horror, "What, why?!"

"Well, we've found nothing, number one. Number two, we can't even bring up the subject to anyone really because they're afraid something will happen if they tell us, and three—" Austin broke into a whisper. We can't even talk about it with Jane!

Mike nodded and sighed, "Alright, I guess you're right."

From that point on, Mike, Austin, James, and Brian all agreed to let the subject be. If someone other than the four of them brought it up, only one word would be spoken about it.

October had come a few days after the library burned down. It was the first football game of the season. It was quite a chilly day. Every boy that was in the locker room was told to dress warmly.

Michael sat in the locker room on a bench. He stared at his locker and his jersey. Number twenty-five, Jason, it read. Mike had a million thoughts on his mind. His mother, father, brother, coach, and Mrs. Beasel. All these people had been and supported him and his twin. He didn't want to let them down in his first game. Especially his father, who had been one of the greats at Benmar High School. Mike knew that if his father was alive and he lost this game, it would break his dad's heart. As Mike thought about everything, the coach said, "Michael, common teams are getting ready to do warm-ups."

Mike breathed, "Coach, I've got a question." The
